SATURDAY | JUNE 1st, 2019

Spectacular trail across the mountains that separate the Atlantic and Indian Oceans from Hout Bay to Fish Hoek. The trail is mainly on single path and is roughly 21km in distance.

2019 brings on the 16th Old Fisherman's Trail Challenge and we will be running from Lakeside to Hout Bay, know as the up run... It is a +-20km trail run.

With most of the run completed on single path, the race is limited to 250 runners on the mountain at one time.

The route is marked and each runner is given a full route description before race day.

There will be a bus that you are able to book onto when you register that will take you from the finish (Hout Bay) to the start (Lakeside)in the morning.

Current men's record from Hout Bay to Fish Hoek, the down run is 01:39:42 set by Ryan Sandes in 2011. The ladies' record is 01:58:54 set by Michelle Lombardi in 2011.

Current men's record from Fish Hoek to Hout Bay, the up run is 01:39:33 set by Michael Bailey in 2012. The ladies' record is 01:59:39 set by Michelle Lombardi in 2016.


There are only 250 entries for the Old Fisherman's Trail Challenge and participants will need to register online when entries open.

Entries were divided up 4 ways:

2018 Participants

Date - TBC

First 100 places will be offered to the 2018 participants who finished, on a first come first serve basis. All 2017 finishers will be emailed an entry code to be used when entering. If your email address has changed please email us to update it.

Public Places

Date - TBC

The second 120 places plus any places left over from the first 100 will be opened to all other entrants.

Charity Places

Date - TBC

There will be 10 Volunteer Wildfire Services charity places available on a first come first serve basis.

Invited Runners

Date - TBC

The last 20 places will be reserved for previous race winners, sponsors, development runners, invited runners and the previous year's marshals. Any places not used will be offered to those on the waiting list.

Entries will close once we have reached capacity of 250 runners.

Race Number Pick Up

  • You will collect your race number when you have equipment check at the start. Please make sure you give yourself enough time to collect your race number and do equipment check. Your race number needs to be placed on the front of you and needs to be visible at all times.
  • Participants must bring their Race Confirmation Email or Confirmation SMS to race start.


  • Substituting your Race Number by either selling it or giving it to someone else. This must take place online until and including May 23th, 2018. Race Number exchange includes the registration fee and any additional purchases (t-shirt, bus ticket, etc) that will be transferred to the new runner. The new runner will have the option to purchase additional add-ons (t-shirts, bus tickets ,etc) if they are still available.
  • There will be a substitution fee of R55.00 paid by the runner taking over the entry. You will have the option to pay via credit card, debit card or EFT when you complete the substitutions form.
  • The Entry Fee is to be sorted out between the runner selling his/her entry to the runner who is taking it over. No refunds of the entry fee will be paid by the organisers.
  • No substitutions will be taken after the 23rd May 2018.


  • If you are unable to race this year after you have received your race confirmation email for 2018, you may withdraw by sending an email to hello@fishermanschallenge.co.za.
  • If you chose to withdraw, the next person on the waiting list will be offered your place, if withdrawal takes place before 23rd May 2018.
  • You will receive a refund after the event, only once the person on the waiting list payment has been confirmed. You will be refunded your entry fee less R55.00 processing fee. This does not include any additional purchases (t-shirt, bus ticket, etc.).
  • Your entry will only be cancelled once the person from the waiting list entry has been confirmed. You will receive a cancellation email to confirm this.
  • No withdrawals will be taken after the 23rd May 2018.


We have a number of roles that need filling by energetic, enthusiastic people wanting to be part of the event experience.

Volunteer roles range from race registration, route marshal, equipment check, handing out medals at the finish, etc.

All volunteers will receive a full briefing a few days before the event.
